How food cost is calculated
- Food cost % = cost ÷ menu price (excl. tax) × 100
- Menu price (excl. tax) = cost ÷ target cost %
- Gross profit = menu price (excl. tax) − cost
- Cost of an ingredient used = purchase price ÷ pack size × amount used
Pricing tips
- Around 30% is often cited as a benchmark for restaurants, but the right figure depends on your concept, location and labour costs.
- Pairing dishes with lower-cost drinks and sides can protect your overall margin.
- Include small-quantity items such as oil, seasonings and packaging to get closer to your real cost.
- When supplier prices rise, recalculate here to see how much to adjust your prices.
Preguntas frecuentes
Q.What food cost % should I aim for?
Answer
Around 30% is a common benchmark for restaurants, but it varies a lot by concept — premium ingredients or drink-led businesses differ. Many owners also look at food plus labour (“prime cost”).
Q.Should I use prices with or without tax?
Answer
Food cost % is normally calculated on the price excluding tax. The tool also shows the tax-inclusive price and lets you switch between dine-in (10%) and take-out (8%).
Q.Is my data saved?
Answer
Nothing is sent to or stored on a server. It disappears when you close the page, so use “Copy result” to keep it.
Q.Can it manage my whole menu?
Answer
It is designed for one dish at a time. For pricing a whole menu and designing the menu itself, we can help through our menu & flyer design service.
