How to design a menu that gets chosen — change just three things.

Published: ・ SYJ Seiichi Inc. / Seiichi Studio

All the information is there, yet guests can't decide. Menus that don't get chosen usually have a problem with order.

Why menus don't get chosen

Photos, prices and descriptions are all there. Guests still hesitate — not because there is too much information, but because the reading order was never designed.

When everything is the same size and weight, the eye has nowhere to land.

01 One hero.

Decide the one dish you most want ordered and make it clearly bigger. Once the hero is set, the rest of the menu falls into supporting roles.

02 Give information an order.

Name → feature → price. Arrange information along the natural line of sight and choosing becomes effortless. Order categories the way you want people to order.

03 Let photos speak.

One photo beats a long description. Give the hero the photo it deserves. If shooting is hard, 3DCG or illustration are options.

Summary

A menu is the restaurant's first proposal to its guests. Hero, order, photo — changing these three changes how people order.
